Broken Horn Outfitters was established in 2003 and we hunt primarily in central and eastern Oregon. We offer a very limited number of hunts each year as to not over hunt the properties we have leased, this also lets me cater to individual needs and be flexible on some of the hunt dates. For 2010 I am booking 6 buck deer hunts on over 5000 acres of private ground in the Heppner Unit. The tags are guaranteed to non-residents. This unit is located in the eastern portion of Oregon and the ranch we hunt on is just outside of Monument Oregon. The 2009 season was a success. Everyone had an opportunity at taking a decent buck and we filled 5 of the 6 tags. The bucks normally range from between 18 - 23 inches wide but we have seen a few bucks that are crowding 30 inches. This is a great hunt for kids as there are a lot of what we like to call “field bucks” as we always get a few out of the fields. The older, wiser bucks don't usually stick around in the fields after daylight though. This unit is in Grant County which holds numerous record book bucks and has always been a destination for hunters that want to take a nice mule deer. The property itself is situated on the John Day River and this is where we set up base camp. There are hundreds of acres of rye/wheat/alfalfa fields which seem to draw the deer and elk, the deer especially, never leave. The elevation on the ranch ranges from between 1000-4000 feet. The higher elevations hold about 1500 acres of timber which is where we see most of our elk. A majority of this area is juniper trees, pine trees, and sage brush. The landowner has developed numerous watering holes throughout the property. These are great places to set up a stand if you are archery hunting during the late summer months. I am expecting to book 5 bull elk hunts for the 2010 season and these are guaranteed Outfitter tags and only available to non-Oregon residents. This is a very difficult tag to draw in the general lottery system with only about an 18% success rate in drawing this tag. There are some very nice bulls in this unit and there are some big herds of rocky mountain elk that stay local to this area. In 2009 I had 5 bull elk hunters and the season was a success. We took one very nice 6x6 bull which will score over 300B&C. There were a few other missed shots and opportunities and we saw elk everyday we hunted. We hunt both Private and Public ground during this hunt. I will also be offering an early season cow hunt which starts in the middle of August. This is a private land cow hunt only. I will have 2 or 3 of these hunts available. This will be a 3 day hunt. Archery hunting is also available for both mule deer and bull elk. This season starts in late August and runs through the end of September. You can hunt both mule deer and bull elk at the same time. These are over the counter tags so they are guaranteed. Typically the best hunting for bull elk takes place during the last two weeks of the season as this is normally when the rut starts. If you are a non- resident and want a guaranteed rifle deer or rifle elk tag your hunt must be booked by no later than March 30th 2010. If you book after March 31st you must draw a tag through the lottery system which isn't always guaranteed. To be eligible for an outfitter tag you must be a non-resident. Accommodations consist of canvas wall tents with wood heat. The guided hunts are all inclusive with meals provided. The guided hunts generally consist of 2 hunters per guide. Broken Horn Outfitters is an equal opportunity service provider and operates under a special use permit provided by the Umatilla National Forest.
