The Hornstrandir Nature Reserve and the Jokulfirdir fjords are perfect areas for walking and hiking. No matter if you are looking for short gentle walks along the beach or in the hills or more strenuous hikes across mountain ranges, this is where you find it. Nature rules here as the last farmers moved out of the area 50 years ago. The vegetation is surprisingly lush. Over two meter high Angelica grows down to the coast and the lowlands and slopes are decorated by spreading patches of wildflowers. Over 50 species of birds nest here and this is the only place in Iceland where no hunting is allowed for Arctic Foxes. Old mountain trails are quite often still visible and some are guided by cairns, maintained through generations.
