Egypt Tours

Egypt

The many things to do in Egypt have made the country one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. If you are thinking about visiting this beautiful and exciting country, the information here will help you plan your trip.

Egypt Facts

Egypt is one of the few transcontinental countries in the world, consisting of 390,000 square miles covering the northeast corner of Africa and the southwest corner of Asia. Much of the population (84 million according to 2013 estimates) lives along the banks of the Nile River in an area covering only 40,000 square miles. The Sahara Desert surrounds the country and is only sparsely inhabited. The Sinai Peninsula makes up the easternmost part of the country, the part in Asia, and has a population of about 500,000. The country is serviced by 9 international airports. Cairo International is the busiest and is the primary hub for EgyptAir.

Best Times to Visit Egypt

Because it is surrounded by the Sahara, most of Egypt is hot. The peak tourist season is from mid October to May, during winter and spring. The temperatures in the southern part of the country are high, usually in the 90s, from May to October and the winters are usually warm. The most comfortable climate for a summer trip would be found in the northern section near the Mediterranean Sea. This is the location of the city of Alexandria and is sometimes called Egypt’s Mediterranean Riviera. The northern temperatures range from 49 to 63 in winter and from 73 to 88 in the summer. There is often snow on the mountains of the Sinai Peninsula during the winter but the rest of the nation rarely sees frost.

Tours, Attractions, and Things to Do in Egypt

Things to Do in EgyptThe most popular attractions in Egypt are the ancient monuments in the Nile Valley. The Pyramids, the Great Sphinx, the Temples of Abu Simbel, the Karnak Temple Complex and the Valley of the Kings are world famous. The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Giza is also the location of the Great Sphinx, a creature with a human face and the body of a lion that is believed to have been constructed to protect or “guard” the pyramids. Giza is the third largest Egyptian city and is less than 13 miles from Cairo. Many people choose to stay in Cairo and travel by car, bus or train to Giza and other famous attractions.

The Karnak Temple Complex is the second most visited site in the country. Only the Great Pyramid at Giza receives more visitors annually. The Complex is located near Luxor and is partially surrounded by el-Karnak, a modern village that takes its name from the historic site. Karnak is often described as a large open-air museum. It is one of the oldest religious sites in existence and consists of four main temples, but only the largest is open to the public. The location is in the southern part of the country where the temperatures are hottest, meaning the best times to visit are winter and spring. The Temples of Abu Simbel are also in the southern part of the nation. They were built as lasting monuments to Ramses II and his wife Queen Nefertiti.

The Sinai Peninsula is another popular destination for tourists from around the world. Sites to see on the peninsula include Mount Sinai, Saint Catherine’s Monastery and the Colored Canyon. Mount Sinai is the location where Moses received the 10 commandments. People of several religious faiths make the trip to the summit where there is a small mosque and a Greek Orthodox Chapel. Saint Catherine’s Monastery lies at the foot of Mount Sinai and is the oldest working Christian Monastery in the world. The Colored Canyon is a place of great natural beauty and is a popular hiking destination on the peninsula. The city of Sharm el-Sheikh is the starting point for many Egypt tours of this historically and geologically significant area.

The city of Alexandria in northern Egypt on the Mediterranean Sea receives many visitors, too. There are archaeologically and historically significant sites in the area, including the necropolis and the Great Library. Because of its location on the coast, it is a popular destination for boating and scuba diving. It can be crowded in the summer because the temperature is more comfortable than in most of the rest of the country. If you have time to spend a few days in several locations around the country, Alexandria is definitely worth including on your itinerary.

There are many different ways to see the ancient sites. There are lots of other things to do in Egypt, once you are done sightseeing. Here’s a look at some of your great choices.

  • Sightseeing Tours in Egypt

Package Tours of Egypt - The most effective way to visit spectacular Egyptian sites is with an all inclusive package deal. You will have the option to choose from 1 day to multi-day packages to maximize your travel time and experience.

  • Take a Sightseeing Air Tour - There are several companies offering airplane and helicopter tours of the Sahara Desert, the Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings and many of the other major attractions in Egypt. Touring by air is the easiest and the fastest way to take in all of the sights. The views from the air are spectacular. Some of the airplane and helicopter Egypt tours land close to the monuments or temples to give you time to explore everything up close. Many of the tour guides are Egyptologists, which really adds to the educational value of the trip.

  • Scuba Diving Egypt

Go Scuba Diving, Kiteboarding or Learn to Sail in Sharm el-Sheikh - The Red Sea is a great place to go for scuba diving in Egypt. There are classes for beginners that include two or more dives with an instructor. There are also plenty of opportunities for experienced divers. Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera has been a popular destination for diving for many years. It’s also popular for kiteboarding and sailing. There are opportunities for kiteboarding and sailing lessons near many of the city’s hotels. Sharm el-Sheikh is at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. It’s easy to find nearby accommodations, as the area is a popular resort for locals and for tourists from all over the world.

  • Cruise the Nile - A Nile sailboat cruise will allow you to see the sights along the banks in a romantic way and for prices that are affordable. While there are many different kinds of sailboats and motorboats that cruise the Nile, the Dahabiya is the traditional mode of transportation. The vessel has been described in many books, including Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile. Many Dahabiya cruises leave from Luxor. You see, Luxor is not just the place to go if touring the Karnak Temple Complex is high on your list of things to do in Egypt. There’s a whole lot more in and around the city.

  • Go Rock Climbing - Rock climbing is a relatively new sport in Egypt, but there are several companies that offer lessons for beginners and experienced climbers alike. You’ll find rock climbing opportunities in a couple of different locations but most are around Mount Sinai. Don’t be tempted to climb on the pyramids. That’s not allowed.

Popular Places to Stay in Egypt

As you are deciding what to do in Egypt, you might also want to think about where to stay. Some of the most popular places to stay are in the major cities of Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor and Taba. Below is a description of one of the popular resorts in each of those cities.

  • Four Seasons Alexandria at San Stefano Beach - The Four Seasons Alexandria features lovely views of the Mediterranean and everything you would expect to find in a luxury hotel including a fitness center, fine dining, a large pool and private balconies for every room. The resort is literally surrounded by many of the things to do in Egypt on the northern coast.

  • The Mena House Hotel in Cairo - While there are many hotels in Cairo, none is more unique than the Mena House. The pool makes you feel as if you have found a desert oasis while the architecture makes you feel as though you have stepped back in time. The views of the Great Pyramid of Giza are among the best in the city.

  • Sofitel Karnak in Luxor - The grounds of the Sofitel Karnak end at the Nile River. You can sit in lounge chairs under the palm trees and watch ships moving up and down the river. The location is only two miles from the Karnak Temple Complex, which makes it a great choice if visiting the Complex is on your list of things to do in Egypt.

  • The Royal Savoy in Sharm el-Sheikh - The Royal Savoy is a truly amazing hotel with beautiful views of the Red Sea, luxurious rooms, an amazing swimming pool and all the amenities you could ask for. The rates are reasonable even during peak tourist season. May is a good time to visit if you want to enjoy the warm sun, the sea breezes and the numerous swimming opportunities. Of course, anytime is a good time to stay at the Royal Savoy.

Popular Places to Eat in Egypt

There are many excellent restaurants in Egypt. Each of the resorts you read about in the last section is home to at least one fine dining experience. Here’s a look at a few of the other popular eateries.

  • Samakmak in Alexandria - The specialty of the Samakmak is seafood. The restaurant serves some of the freshest seafood and fish on the coast, including a crab stew that is cooked in a traditional clay pot. The spaghetti with clams is another good choice.

  • Osmanly Restaurant in Cairo - The Osmanly serves traditional Turkish food. The chefs are well trained and the service is excellent. I think the menu is varied enough to satisfy even the pickiest eater.

  • Smileys in Luxor - Smiley’s is near the Meridian Hotel in Luxor. The restaurant has an extensive wine selection, which can be difficult to find in the city. The menu includes local dishes and American cuisine for visitors that want something more familiar.

  • Cafe Royal in Sharm el-Sheikh - The Café Royal is a short distance from the Royal Savoy and serves up mouth-watering grilled steaks. The prices are very reasonable, which is one of the reasons that the restaurant is so popular. You really get your money’s worth at the Café Royal.

Now that you know more about the places to eat, places to stay and things to do in Egypt, you may be ready to book your trip. A trip to Egypt is a trip of a lifetime for many people. We hope that you enjoy your stay!
